Dogs with Big Sticks

So over the last few days, I think its fair to say that I’ve become a little obsessed with pictures of dogs carrying sticks. Not any old stick mind you, we’re talking about bug sticks, like unfeasonably massive sticks!

The icing on the cake for me today was when I posted the following photo on twitter.

I’d never seen a stick so big but alas I was wrong in my assumption when one of our followers posted this picture in response.. – sigh –

So in an effort to purge myself of this dog with big stick obsession I did a little searching and came up with the following pics for your viewing pleasure. It would appear that dogs appreciate a decent sized stick!

Note to self though. Dogs and sticks DON’T mix!

Robin Hargreaves, President elect of the British Veterinary Association, said owners risk causing ‘horrendous problems’ to their pets.

At his own practice in Lancashire, he operates on around one dog a month because of stick injuries and estimates most vet practices do the same.

“Never throw sticks for dogs,” he advised. “It is a violent incident that causes real damage. We have some horrendous problems. Even if you do it now, never do it again.”

Fair to say though, throwing some of these sticks would require some serious effort. Either way, best to air on the side of caution and stick (no pun intended) to slightly safer toys!
