Peregrine falcon – Locked on target!

Peregrine Falcon - Locked On Target! - Peregrine Falcon By

The Peregrine falcon is the fastest bird in the world – As of 2018, the fastest recorded falcon was at 242 mph (nearly 390 km/h).

Researchers at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and at Oxford University used 3D computer simulations in 2018 to show that the high speed allows peregrines to gain better maneuverability and precision in strikes.

Interesting Peregrine Falcon fact:  A study shows that their black malar stripe (the dark bit on the falcons cheeks) exists to reduce glare from solar radiation, allowing them to see better.

A study by the Macaulay Library and iNaturalist showed that the malar stripe is thicker where there is more solar radiation which also helps supports the solar glare hypothesis.

I guess if you are travelling at 390 km/h – Being able to see where you are going is kinda important. Credit to @mostly.birds on instargram for capturing this beautiful bird at full speed!
